GMC Jimmy Slip Yoke Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: What tools are required to service and repair the slip yoke on GMC Jimmy?
A: The maintenance of a Slip Yoke requires ball puller (J23996-2) along with u joint bearing separator (J9522-3) and u joint bearing spacer remover (J9522-5) that operates with j9522-3. First remove the specified bearings in sequence while marking all yokes to keep driveshaft balanced for reassembling purposes. The production Universal Joints become unusable due to disassembly so all separated components must be thrown away. Place the Universal Joint inside the 30 mm (1 1/8 inch) socket at the lower ear of the yoke while horizontally supporting the propeller shaft on a press. Use j9522-5 to extract the open horizontal bearing cups by placing it onto the bearing cups then press the lower bearing cup out. Once the bearing cup fails to dislodge completely, lift the cross to create space for j9522-5 tool which can push out the seal and bearing cup in tandem. Both bearing cup installation and removal require the propeller shaft rotation for pressing out the opposite section. Inspect retaining ring grooves and bearing cup bores for impurities while performing this operation. After removing sheared plastic retainers from the yoke grooves use cleaning methods to prepare the location for the new bearing cups. Begin installation by adding the flange yoke to the inner cross on the ball tube yoke before installing bearing cup assemblies and the ball support yoke cross within the flange yoke by using the marked reference points. Use a hammer to strike the flange yoke if any trunnions appear too tight since this will help the retaining rings find their proper position.
