GMC Safari Parking Brake Shoe Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Parking Brake Shoe on GMC Safari?
A: Vehicle elevation followed by tire and wheel removal is necessary to replace the Parking Brake Shoe. Lifting the tension on park brake cables requires nut adjustment at the adjuster before disconnecting the brake cable from the actuator lever to extract the rotor. After positioning the adjustment screw at its fully home place within the notched adjustment nut you should take out the park brake shoe assembly from the backing plate by pulling the shoe against the retaining spring. Move the shoe assembly through the Axle Shaft by guiding the exposed shoe ends when removing it. Installation starts with cleaning both the adjusting screw and tappet through the backing plate face alignment and continuing with the park brake shoe assembly by passing the open ends over the Axle Shaft. After positioning the open ends on the actuator and tappet you should drop the park brake shoe beneath the retaining spring . Check that the shoe assembly sits correctly on the backing plate central position with its ends situated in the slots before making any necessary adjustments. After mounting the rotor put back the park brake cable to the park brake actuator lever then install the tire combined with wheel. Complete the process by both removing the safety stands then enabling vehicle descent while performing any required park brake cable adjustments.
