  Q: How to replace the brake shoes on GMC Savana 2500?

  A: Installation of the pin into the park brake lever must happen first followed by raising the vehicle for suitable support before proceeding with the replacement of brake shoes. The first step should be tire and wheel removal before taking out the rear Brake Drum. The task begins with removing rear Brake Shoe return springs (7,8) and their accompanying hold-down springs and pins and shoe guide and rear Brake Shoe actuator with spring together with actuator link and rear parking brake lever strut and spring and rear Brake Shoe adjuster spring and adjuster from the assembly. Check all components for discoloration and wear and leakage from the rear brake cylinder and scoring and machining tolerance on the rear Brake Drum after you remove the rear brake shoes (1,14). Reverse brake shoes (1,14) must be installed first followed by the rear Brake Shoe adjuster with the right and left brake shoes (1,14) avoiding screw interchange. Install the rear Brake Backing Plate, adjusting screws and threads should receive high temperature silicone brake lubrication before installation. Install first the rear Brake Shoe adjuster spring with matching distance between its coils through the adjusting screw before continuing with the installation of rear park brake lever strut and spring along with the rear Brake Shoe actuator link followed by rear Brake Shoe actuator and spring then shoe guide followed by hold-down pins and hold-down springs and finally rear Brake Shoe return springs (7,8). Next install the rear Brake Drum before removing the park brake lever pin and putting back the tire together with the wheel assembly. To correctly seat the Wheel Cylinders and brake shoes personnel should apply brake pedal 2/3 of its distance when the engine is off followed by a 15-second waiting period and repeated process until brake pedal obtains the proper firmness.
