GMC Savana 2500 Brake Calipers Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the rear brake calipers on GMC Savana 2500?
A: Before replacing the rear brake caliper check the brake master cylinder reservoir fluid level; no fluid needs to be drained when the fluid stands at the midway point between maximum and minimum marks but fluid should be drained if it sits higher than the midpoint. Lift the vehicle while setting it on supports before taking off the tire and wheel unit. Push the brake caliper pistons back by pressing the c-clamp down onto the top of the housing from the outside until the pistons are fully sealed inside. Put on a rubber cover to avoid brake fluid loss while cleaning the hose end. Disconnect the brake hose to caliper bolt to discard both copper brake hose gaskets. You must first disconnect the caliper guide bolt and detach the brake caliper from the assembly. Before fitting new Brake Pads compress the piston smoothly with a c-clamp through the caliper bores using an old Brake Pad or metal plate as protection. Lift and pull the inner edge of the caliper boots to remove air from their space and keep the boots lower than the top of the pistons. Place the brake caliper over the mounting bracket after discarding old adhesive and cleaning bolt threads with brake cleaner to put threadlocker gm part 12345493 (Canadian Part 10953488) on the bolt threads. Fit the brake caliper mounting bolts and tighten the guide pin bolts to 34 nm (25 ft. Lbs.) for 15 series models and 72 nm (53 ft. Lbs.) for 25/35 series models. Place a rubber cap aside from the brake hose fitting then put two new cupper brake hose gaskets onto the fitting receptacle before connecting the brake hose to caliper bolt. Tighten the bolt to 40 nm (30 ft. Lbs.). Release hydraulic pressure from the brake system then put back tire and wheel before placing the vehicle down and filling the reservoir with fresh brake fluid to required level.
