How to Replace the Shift Linkage Boot on GMC Canyon?

The first step to replace the control lever and shift boot requires shifting out both the shift lever assembly and console (if present). The first step involves removing the control lever boot screws which enables you to separate the boot from the lever. Put the transmission in neutral position before taking out the bolts from the control lever housing assembly for complete removal of the housing along with the gasket. For protection from transmission entry of foreign materials apply the masking to the control lever housing opening. Then remove the control lever housing if necessary for disassembly. Installation includes cleaning and drying the sealing surface and reattaching the control lever housing only if you disassembled it. Also remove the masking before proceeding. Install the control lever housing assembly onto the transmission structure by fitting the bolts to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.) of torque value. Position the boot over the control lever while checking that no carpet material separates the boot from the floor panel and gently tilt it for correct seating. Install the control lever boot screws before putting back the console (if present) but first reinstall the shift lever assembly. Secure the boot screws to 2.5 nm (22 inch lbs.).
