  Q: How to replace the Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) on LY6/L76/L92 engines on GMC Sierra 3500 Classic?

  A: A proper cleanup operation should precede Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) replacement for LY6/L76/L92 engine models to avoid engine contamination. First secure the vehicle in position and enable working beneath it. Use a clip tool to disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector from the CMP sensor wire harness. First remove three bolts (738) securing the CMP sensor wire harness (737) and separate all electrical connectors connecting the CMP sensor to the CMP actuator magnet. Both the CMP sensor wire harness (737) and CMP sensor (703) and O-ring seal (704) need to be removed separately. Check the O-ring seal to see if any damage or cuts exist. The sensor requires clean engine oil to lubricate its surface before installation onto the device. First place the CMP sensor (703) onto the front cover before installing the CMP sensor wire harness (737). Screw in the 3 CMP sensor wire harness bolts (738) and torque them to 12 N.m (106 lb in) after connecting electrical connectors between the CMP sensor wires and the actuator magnet. To complete the repair reconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector until it joins the CMP sensor wire harness and lower the vehicle.
