GMC Sierra 3500 Classic Control Arm Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the lower control arm on 2500 and 3500 on GMC Sierra 3500 Classic?
A: A proper replacement of lower control arms for models 2500 and 3500 requires vehicle lift and tire wheel removal followed by installation of mechanics wire support between the knuckle and upper Control Arm. The knuckle and upper Control Arm require support through mechanics wire or an equivalent material. Start replacement by detaching the stabilizer shaft links from the lower Control Arm while also removing the Shock Absorber module and Torsion Bars with wheel drive shafts. Begin by using j 43631 Ball Joint separator and j 45851 Ball Joint separator protector adapters to separate the lower Ball Joint from the Steering Knuckle then remove the lower Ball Joint retaining nut. First remove the Control Arm nuts and washers from both sections before beginning the Control Arm bolts and arm removal. When installing place the lower Control Arm in position then secure it with Control Arm bolts and washers following the fastener notice. Tighten each lower Control Arm retaining nut to a torque setting of 175 n.m (129 lb ft). Space the lower Ball Joint in the Steering Knuckle followed by the wheel drive shaft while securing the lower Ball Joint with a torque of 110 n.m (81 lb ft). Start by placing the shock module back in place before removing knuckle and upper Control Arm supports for installation of stabilizer shaft links to the lower Control Arm. Reinstall the tire with wheel then break loose and remove both supports before lowering the vehicle to perform front end alignment.
