The first step to change the park/neutral position switch for 4l60-e/4l65-e/4l70-e automatic transmissions requires users to engage the parking brake and set the transmission to neutral. Drivers with 4-wheel drive vehicles must remove the front propeller shaft before proceeding. Begin by raising and properly supporting the vehicle then remove the park/neutral position (PNP) switch electrical connector. Start by removing the manual shaft lever nut before taking out the transmission control lever from the manual shaft. Next, remove the pnp switch bolts and take off the pnp switch from the manual shaft; use a file to smooth the edge of the manual shaft because if the pnp switch does not easily slide off. Put the pnp switch in position on the manual shaft's flat sections and push it until the mounting bracket touches the transmission bosses. A new pnp switch includes a built-in positive assurance bracket so the park neutral switch aligner (J 41364-A) becomes redundant during installation. Attach the park neutral switch aligner (J 41364-A) to the pnp switch after installing its bolts hand-tight. The adapter should sit on the pnp switch while the two slots on the tool should match the lower tabs on it. Secure the two bolts with torque at 25 n.m (18 lb ft) while rotating the tool until its upper locator pin matches the slot on the switch top. Take out both the park neutral switch aligner j 41364-a and the positive assurance bracket if present. Crank the transmission control lever onto the manual shaft by installing its nut to a torque of 25 n.m (18 lb ft). Next, reconnect the pnp switch electrical connector. If the vehicle has 4wd, reinstall the front propeller shaft, lower the vehicle, and check the switch for proper operation, ensuring the engine starts only in the park (P) or neutral (N) positions; the switch warrants replacement in cases where it fails to function properly.
