  • Q: What tools are required to replace the engine front Timing Cover on LY6, L76, and L92 engines on GMC Sierra 3500 Classic?
A: To change the engine front cover on ly6, l76, and l92 engines, the following tools are required: front and rear cover alignment tool (J 41476). Start by the said removal of the Water Pump, crankshaft balancer, and the disenchantment of the engine harness electrical connector from the camshaft position (CMP) sensor wire harness. Next, break off the oil pan-to-front cover bolts, front cover bolts (501), remove the front cover (502) and gasket (503) and discard the gasket (503). Remove the crankshaft front oil seal, and if changing the engine front cover, continue with the removal of the cmp sensor wire harness bolts (738), disconnect the cmp sensor wire harness from the cmp sensor, and remove the cmp sensor wire harness (737) and cmp sensor (703). In addition, take off the cmp actuator magnet bolts (751) and magnet (752), discard the cmp actuator magnet gasket (753). While installing, do not reuse the crankshaft oil seal and front cover gasket; do not apply sealant to the front cover gasket, unless required. Make sure that the crankshaft front oil seal is centered correctly or there may be early wear and leaks. If replacing the front cover, it is mentioned to insert a new cmp actuator magnet gasket (753), then the cmp actuator magnet (752) and bolts (751), tighten to 12 n.m (106 lb in). Check the cmp sensor o-ring seal (704) for wear and lubricate with clean engine oil followed by installing the cmp sensor (703). Mount the cmp sensor wire harness (737) onto the front cover and hook it up to the cmp sensor, fix the cmp sensor wire harness bolts (738) using 12 n.m (106 lb in). Apply a 5mm (0.20 in) bead of sealant to the oil pan to engine block join, mount the new engine front cover gasket (503) and front cover (502) to the engine, and install the front cover bolts (501), and oil pan-to-front cover bolts up to snug. Mount the front and rear cover alignment tool (J 41476) on the front cover, placing the tapered legs in contact with the machined faces. Tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt until snug and then the oil pan to front cover bolts to 25 n.m (18 lbft), engine front cover bolts to 25 n.m (18 lbft). Take off the alignment tool and then reconnect the engine harness electrical connector from the cmp sensor wire harness electrical connector, and then the new crankshaft front oil seal and then the Water Pump later.
