GMC Sierra 3500 Timing Chain Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the timing chain and sprockets on GMC Sierra 3500?
A: You must start your repair process by disassembling the engine front cover before proceeding. Begin by putting the camshaft and crankshaft timing marks in alignment before loosening the camshaft sprocket bolts. Finish by removing the camshaft sprocket and Timing Chain from the assembly. The crankshaft protector button (J 42846) goes into the crankshaft's end before using a suitable three jaw puller to remove the crankshaft sprocket. Professionally clean the Timing Chain components along with their sprockets. The crankshaft sprocket installer (J 22102) helps install the crankshaft sprocket while maintaining perfect alignment between the keyway and crankshaft pin. Use the crankshaft sprocket installer (J 22102) to remove it from the crankshaft. Next, spin the crankshaft to position the crankshaft sprocket alignment marks at the 12 o'clock position. You must position the camshaft sprocket alignment mark to the 6 o'clock mark before installing it. The sprocket must slip its teeth into the Timing Chain to avoid damaging the camshaft retainer structure. The installation process requires using anything other than a hammer. The correct installation of the camshaft sprocket starts with checking to ensure both the crankshaft sprocket sits at the 12 o'clock mark and the camshaft sprocket rests at the 6 o'clock position. Tighten the camshaft bolts to 30 nm (22 ft. Lbs.) torque. To finish the installation you need to reposition the engine front cover.
