GMC Sonoma Neutral Safety Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the Neutral Safety Switch on GMC Sonoma?
A: To change park neutral position switch, start by parking the vehicle and putting it into neutral gear. Lift up the car, depose the nut connecting the transmission control lever to the manual bar, and disconnect the transmission control lever. Unplug the electrical connectors from switch and unbolt the park/neutral position switch from the transmission and take out the switch from the manual shaft. If it isn't easy to slide off the switch, file the outer world of the manual shaft so that it is free from burrs. For installation, position the switch hub flats against the manual shaft flat and slide the switch over the shaft until the mounting bracket kisses the mounting bosses of the transmission. Even if a new switch is going to be installed, it will be accompanied by a posit aster assurance bracket and thereby negates the need for the neutral position adjustment tool. Mount the switch to the transmission with two bolts finger tight and place the neutral position adjustment tool (J41364-A) at the switch and make sure the slots marry the tool's tabs. Rotate the tool to align the top locator pin with the switch slot after which it is bolted to 25 nm (18 ft lbs). Take the tool away and, if necessary, the positive assurance bracket. Re-attach the electrical connectors to the switch and install the transmission control lever to the manual shaft with the nut tightening it to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Finally, lower down the vehicle to ensure that there is proper functioning of the switch; the engine is to be started in p (Park) or n (Neutral) positions only. In case it does not work properly, you have to replace the switch.
