GMC Yukon Steering Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the lower intermediate steering shaft on GMC Yukon?
A: Begin lower intermediate Steering Shaft replacement by setting front wheels to straight ahead positions while locking the Steering Column to avoid sir coil assembly damage. The Steering Column anti-rotation pin (J 42640) goes into the Steering Column lower access hole and allows you to mark down all necessary intermediate shaft positions before actual installation. Start by disassembling the shaft with initial removal of the upper and lower shaft bolt and then taking away the lower shaft coupler bolt to slide the intermediate shaft assembly towards the dash until the lower shaft coupler clears the steering gear input shaft. First re-fit the lower end of the intermediate shaft into the lower shaft coupler and the upper end of the intermediate shaft into the upper shaft. Maintain the alignment between the noted marks if you plan to use the same shaft. Apply torque of 47 nm (35 ft. Lbs.) through installation of the lower intermediate shaft coupler onto the steering worm shaft followed by tightening the bolt of the lower coupler and upper shaft to 47 nm (35 ft. Lbs.) while securing the pinch bolt to the same torque value. Remove the Steering Column anti-rotation pin (J 42640) from the lower access hole of the Steering Column.
