Pitman Arm

The replacement of the Pitman Arm starts with steering gear removal followed by securing it inside a vise. The procedure begins by removing the Pitman Arm nut along with its washer followed by removing the Pitman Arm from its shaft through use of either Pitman Arm puller (J 6632-01) or Pitman Arm puller (J 29107-A). After placing the new Pitman Arm onto the steering gear you should add a new washer and fasten the nut with a torque setting of 250 nm (184 lb ft). The technician should remove the steering gear from the vise to eventually reinstall it. Complete the adjustment by setting the front toe to the proper position.

A vehicle lift and support system should be used before beginning the idler arm replacement process. You should remove the idler arm to relay rod retaining nut then dispose of it. Position the J 43631 (Ball Joint Remover) under the idler arm to disconnect it from the relay rod before you remove the idler arm to frame mounting bolts to extract the arm from the vehicle. When installing the idler arm position it against the frame structure while following all mandatory fastener safety procedures. Install the idler arm by fitting it to its frame mounting bolts and tighten them to 150 Nm (111 lb ft). Fasten the idler arm to the relay rod followed by a new idler arm mounted to relay rod retaining nut that needs tightening to 63 Nm (47 lb ft). Perform the final step by lowering the vehicle before inspecting the wheel alignment.

The replacement of a Pitman Arm begins with safely raising the vehicle before installation. The power steering gear should be removed before a vise mounts it. The Pitman Arm requires its nut and washer to be removed before using either a Pitman Arm puller or a universal Pitman Arm puller to detach it from the pitman shaft. When installing the Pitman Arm position it on the power steering gear by matching the reference points that were marked during removal on both the Pitman Arm and Pitman Arm shaft. The installation process requires a new Pitman Arm washer with nut tightening to 250 nm (184 lb ft). Release the power steering gear from the vise before its reinstallation. Lower the vehicle and inspect its wheel alignment as the last step.

For removing the idler arm from the relay rod, use the J 43631 (Ball Joint Remover); then remove the idler arm to frame mounting bolts and take the idler arm out of the vehicle. For installation, align the idler arm to the frame, with caution on fastener guidelines. Attach the idler arm to frame mounting bolts and torque them to 150 Nm (111 lb ft). Join the idler arm to the relay rod and then fit a new idler arm to relay rod retaining nut and tighten it to 63 Nm (47 lb ft). Finally, lower the vehicle and have it aligned if out of alignment.

Raise and support the vehicle.

Install the power steering gear into a vise.

Remove it and discard it.

Attach the pitman arm to the power steering gear, ensuring the marks made during removal are aligned on both the pitman arm and the pitman arm shaft.

Take off the pitman arm nut and washer.

Take off the pitman arm nut and washer.

Remove it and discard it.

Begin by installing the idler arm to the frame.

Remove the engine shield if equipped and discard the idler arm nut.

Use puller (J 24319-B) to separate the idler arm from the relay rod.

Use the Ball Joint Remover (J 43631).

Take off the pitman arm nut and washer, then detach the pitman arm from the pitman shaft using either a Pitman Arm Puller or a Universal Pitman Arm Puller.

Install a new pitman arm washer and nut, tightening the nut to 250 N.m (184 lb ft).
