The bracket replacement procedure must follow two steps according to bracket connection type: replace the bracket when it is bolted and replace the entire jacket assembly when it is welded. A measurement of the lower edge of the upper jacket to a specified point on the lower jacket should be performed to detect jacket assembly collapse where the replacement of the defective jacket assembly is necessary. The inflatable restraint coil assembly needs removal from the Steering Column to rotate the shaft since hanging the assembly freely protects coil assembly integrity. Check the Steering Shaft for sheared plastic at its injection points because replacement of the shaft is necessary if shearing occurs. The technician must inspect the Steering Shaft runout using a dial indicator to check its lower end while rotating the wheel. The allowed runout measurement should not exceed 1.60 mm (0.06 in).
