Brake drums usually need no refinishing unless they show major corrosion issues combined with pitting, surface breaks, heat damages, external markings, deep surface scratches, or when radial runout problems cross specified thresholds. Measure brake drum diameter first by taking off the tires and wheels then examine surface wear and radial runout. Use Rotor/Drum Flange Resurfacing Kit (J 41013) to clean corrosion from brake drum flange before putting it on the lathe as directed by the manufacturer while securing vibration cuffs as instructed. When the lathe is active adjust the cutting tool until it reaches the brake drum surface then check for proper height at the witness mark. Follow lathe producer guidelines to refinish the brake drum then measure the diameter after each cut and discard the drum when it reaches its safety maximum dimensions. Non-directional surface needs 120 grit aluminum oxide sandpaper when using a non-directional finishing tool and 150 grit aluminum oxide sandpaper paired with a sanding block for other tools. Brush each friction area with denatured alcohol or brake cleaner after bringing out the finish. Unmount the brake drum after sanding and use the Hub Cleaning Kit (J 42450-A) if needed to wipe away wheel bearing flange corrosion that risks a larger brake system vibration.

    Before replacing the Brake Drum you need to release the parking brake completely then jack up and support the vehicle. Pull off the wheel and tire unit before taking out the Brake Drum. Reinstall the Brake Drum using the rotor resurfacing kit to clean the hub/flange attachment surface of the Brake Drum. To improve installation you should carefully remove rust or corrosion from the drum's edge braking surface when needed. Use the wheel hub resurfacing kit (J 42450-A) to clean the wheel hub flange. After adjustment install the Brake Drum next put back the tire and wheel setup. Press the brake pedal three times to let Brake Shoe parts reach their right drum position.
