How to replace the brake drum on Chevrolet Equinox?

Before replacing the Brake Drum you need to release the parking brake completely then jack up and support the vehicle. Pull off the wheel and tire unit before taking out the Brake Drum. Reinstall the Brake Drum using the rotor resurfacing kit to clean the hub/flange attachment surface of the Brake Drum. To improve installation you should carefully remove rust or corrosion from the drum's edge braking surface when needed. Use the wheel hub resurfacing kit (J 42450-A) to clean the wheel hub flange. After adjustment install the Brake Drum next put back the tire and wheel setup. Press the brake pedal three times to let Brake Shoe parts reach their right drum position.

To swap the Brake Drum start by getting these items: drum to Brake Shoe clearance gagecautiously number 22364-01) and Wheel Hub resurfacing kit component j 42450-a. Lift the vehicle then take off the rear tire and wheel parts from the vehicle. Before you remove the rear Brake Drum put penetrating oil onto the wheel studs axle hub and Brake Drum. Also put oil on the Brake Drum retainer. To make the Brake Drum easier to remove you should take out the rubber plug from the backing plate and apply a screwdriver with two contact points on the adjuster lever. Push the small actuator lever away and rotate the adjuster upward until it is seated using a second screwdriver. Use the Wheel Hub resurfacing kit j 42450-a to clear the connection area between the rear axle flange and Brake Drum. Before lowering the vehicle put on the Brake Drum plus tire and wheel assembly but first adjust and measure the rear brake shoes with the specified gage.

How to properly service and repair a brake drum on Chevrolet Malibu?

First lift the vehicle and set supports under it for Brake Drum replacement. First locate wheel position on the axle flange and take out the entire wheel tire setup. Line up the Brake Drum position with the axle flange correctly to prevent breaking the splash shield or backing plate by prying force. This can result in brake instability when riding. To simplify Brake Drum removal try eliminating the retainer clips first while checking the parking brake status and tap gently on the drum periphery using a rubber mallet. Avoid applying excessive force that could warp the drum. Install the Brake Drum with the hub cleaning kit (J42450-A). Align the drum placement with the marks from removal. Place the tire and wheel assembly onto the vehicle and drop it back to the ground.

Lift the vehicle then take off the rear tire and wheel parts from the vehicle. Before you remove the rear Brake Drum put penetrating oil onto the wheel studs axle hub and Brake Drum. Also put oil on the Brake Drum retainer. To make the Brake Drum easier to remove you should take out the rubber plug from the backing plate and apply a screwdriver with two contact points on the adjuster lever. Push the small actuator lever away and rotate the adjuster upward until it is seated using a second screwdriver. Use the Wheel Hub resurfacing kit j 42450-a to clear the connection area between the rear axle flange and Brake Drum. Before lowering the vehicle put on the Brake Drum plus tire and wheel assembly but first adjust and measure the rear brake shoes with the specified gage.
