Drum brake refinishing should never be performed to manage brake noise or issues with premature lining wear or cosmetic corrosion or drum discoloration. Proceed with refinishing operations only when drum braking surfaces show severe scoring or when brake pulsations appear from out-of-round conditions or when corrosion reaches below the braking surface. Begin by using a micrometer to measure the largest measurement of the brake drum. Replace the drum rather than refinishing it when its diameter surpasses the maximum allowed refinish size. The Rotor Resurfacing Kit (J 41013) enables complete removal of rust from the brake drum flange. All drum refinishing should follow brake lathe manufacturer specifications to create a top-quality stopping surface for vehicles. Apply 120 grit aluminum oxide sandpaper to produce a non-directional braking surface on the machined component before finishing with the use of brake parts cleaner (GM P/N 12377981 or equivalent).

After cleaning, it is time to refinish the brake drum as prescribed by the brake lathe manufacturer's operating instructions. Lastly, wipe the breaking surfaces with denatured alcohol before drying with non-lubricated, filter compressed air.
