Brake Drum

Before servicing the brake drum you should measure its largest diameter using a micrometer; if the unit surpasses the maximum refinish specifications then replace it rather than refinishing it. You can use the J 41013 Rotor Resurfacing Kit (J 41013) to eliminate rust from the brake drum flange before fixing the drum's issues. Deep rust that extends beyond braking and major damage needs this kit's cleaning tools. Following brake drum machining you need to run 120 grit aluminum oxide sandpaper over the surface to make it non-directional. Using GM P/N 12377981 brake parts cleaner or its approved equivalent produces the highest quality brake stop performance results when you clean the braking surfaces.

Before starting the Brake Drum replacement you will need the j 22364-01 drum to Brake Shoe clearance gage and j 42450-a wheel hub resurfacing kit. Begin by taking the wheel set and tire off then disengage the Brake Drum retainer when appropriate. Put tiny drops of penetrating oil directly on the parts between the wheel studs, axle shaft hub, and Brake Drum before dismounting the drum. When the Brake Drum does not budge, unscrew the rubber plug from the backing plate followed by inserting a screwdriver against the adjuster lever. Push the adjuster lever away from the adjuster and use a second screwdriver to gently lift the adjuster up until it rests in position. Remove the Brake Drum afterwards. Det bear the parts where the rear Brake Drum connects with the brake axel flange using the wheel hub resurfacing kit (J 42450-A). Measure the Brake Drum clearance with j22364-01 before setting the brake shoes position to install the rear drum and wheel then tire in the sequence.

Use one to push the adjuster lever away from the adjuster and the other to rotate the adjuster upwards until it locks in place. You should clean the Brake Drum connection area using the wheel hub resurfacing kit (J 42450-A). Before placing the rear Brake Drum and wheel use the drum to Brake Shoe clearance gage (J 22364-01) to measure the drum space and correctly position the brake shoes.

To fix the brake drum you will need an Rotor Resurfacing Kit (J41013) along with your other tools. Drums should stay untouched during brake service operations although customers might complain about brake noise, lining deterioration, cosmetic surface damage, or discolored brake surface. Refinish the brake drum parts when there is deep damage to the braking surface or vibration caused by quality issues like out-of-round configuration or surface pitting/errosion. Start with a micrometer to check the largest drum diameter; if it hits the maximum refinish limit replace the drum before repairing. Before moving forward use the Rotor Resurfacing Kit J41013 or similar product to scrape rust off the brake drum flange completely. Working with a well-done braking surface helps drivers control their vehicles during stops effectively. Following processing take a non-directional sanding approach on 120 grit aluminum oxide sandpaper followed by cleaning the braking surfaces with brake parts cleaner according to part number specification GM-P/N 12377981 or Canadian-P/N 10953463.

Firstly, to replace the Brake Drum, lift and support the vehicle safely. Subsequently, take out the tire and wheel assembly. If available, remove the Brake Drum retainers. Finally remove the Brake Drum. If the brake shoes interfere with removal, retract the Brake Shoe adjuster. After simply cleaning the surface of the rear axle flange on which the new Brake Drum is to be installed, use j-42450-a (Wheel Hub Resurfacing Kit). Upon install, set the drum brakes and restore the tire and wheel assembly.

Adjust the drum brakes after installation and reinstall the tire and wheel assembly.

Apply a small amount of penetrating oil around the wheel studs, axle shaft hub, and brake drum.
