Various types of accidents that cause damage to vehicle frames together with significant body and sheet metal components can produce misalignment or damage to the Steering Column as well as affect supplementary inflatable restraint systems. To confirm proper installation inspect all Steering Column capsules should be fully seated in bracket slots. Use manual force to check for loose conditions by pushing or pulling the capsules. The bracket requirements a replacement if its capsules do not fit properly into the slots and it remains attached through bolts to the jacket assembly. The jacket assembly needs replacement when capsules are not properly in position and a welded bracket exists. Test the distance between the lower edge of the upper jacket and a designated bottom jacket point to determine if the jacket assembly shows signs of deformation; get a new jacket assembly if measurements exceed suggested limits. Check the Steering Shaft for sheared plastic material because its presence requires replacement of the shaft. The dial indicator at the lower Steering Shaft end should help detect any frame damage responsible for bent steering shafts while rotating the wheel to ensure a runout below 1.60 mm (0.0625 inch).

Allow it to hang freely before rotating the shaft to prevent damage to the coil.

Conduct a visual inspection for sheared injected plastic; if present, install a new steering shaft.

Install a new jacket.
