Chevrolet Malibu Steering Column Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: What should be inspected and replaced in cases with frame damage or deployed inflatable restraint systems to ensure the steering column is not damaged or misaligned on Chevrolet Malibu?
A: Any collision that deforms the frame or causes major body or sheet metal damage or strikes the Steering Column would potentially harm and misalign the Steering Column. Similar problems can occur after supplemental inflatable restraint system deployment. Examine both the Steering Column bracket assembly capsules to make sure they fit firmly into the bracket slots and test for looseness by manual push or pull; replace the bracket through the jacket assembly if bolted but select a new jacket assembly when the bracket is welded. The jacket assembly should be replaced if the measurement from the lower edge of the upper jacket to its defined point on the bottom jacket exceeds specified dimensions. The inflatable restraint coil assembly must remain unhinged from the Steering Column before you rotate the shaft because this approach prevents coil assembly damage. A visual examination of the Steering Shaft must be performed to look for sheared injected plastic material; new Steering Shaft installation is required if sheared plastic components are detected. The steering runout measurement using a dial indicator must be checked at the Steering Shaft bottom while spinning the wheel and should not exceed 1.60 mm.
