Chevrolet Malibu Steering Wheel Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the steering wheel on Chevrolet Malibu?
A: Begin Steering Column replacement by disabling the supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) system before removing Steering Wheel and trim covers. Disconnect all electrical connectors that are attached to the multifunction switch and remove the electrical harness from the Steering Column area. Move on to remove both the sir coil and the driver's insulator panel from the vehicle. Work starts with removing the upper pinch bolt attached to the intermediate shaft. Then proceed to take out lower Steering Column mounting bolts and upper mounting bolts. Steering columns become damage-prone after removal so exercise caution at all times. Avoid dropping it or hammering on the end of the shaft to protect the collapsible design of the component. Install the new Steering Column into the vehicle while first tightening the lower fasteners before moving on to tighten the upper fasteners for safety. Tighten the lower mounting nuts on the Steering Column at 26 nm (19 ft. Lbs.) and upper mounting bolts at the same torque rating. Firmly connect the intermediate shaft's upper pinch bolt using a 22 nm torque (16 ft. Lbs.). Reposition the sir coil then hook up electrical connectors to the multifunction switch while reattaching the electrical harness to the Steering Column. Complete the installation by putting back the trim covers and driver insulator panel along with the Steering Wheel before you enable the sir system.
