A professional must begin Engine Control Module services by clearing DTCs through a scan tool. The engine should be tried for start-up after Service Programming but another attempt should be made if there is no start or inadequate performance. Verify that the PCM should be programmed only after checking for secure connections between the control module and DLC and updated Techline operating software and correct calibration part number (XXXXXX) for the vehicle. The control module needs to be programmed as the next step. Failure to perform programming requires the replacement of control module (XXXXXX) with post-programming of the new control module.

Clearing DTCs via a scan tool is a necessary first step before servicing the Engine Control Module. The Service Programming procedure should be performed another time if the engine fails to start or operates incorrectly. You must verify that the control module and DLC connections remain secure alongside an updated Techline operating software and correct calibration part number for the vehicle before performing PCM programming. The control module needs to be attempted for programming but if the programming process fails completely then replace the unit.

Before replacing the powertrain control module (PCM) ensure the ignition system is turned off because it protects the module against damage occurring during power disconnection and connector handling. Start by jotting down current transaxle fluid and engine oil life indexes and proceed to disconnect the battery negative cable. Use a screwdriver to detach the intake air duct/resonator connection to the pcm housing and snap the Air Filter housing clamp locks on top of the air cleaner housing assembly to gain access to inspect the air cleaner cover and pcm. The technician should start by sliding the air cleaner element assembly to the fender to detach it from the air inlet assembly while also loosening the pcm connector bolts and disconnecting both pcm connectors before pcm removal. The off-board programming of the pcm should be finished prior to any installation process. Put the pcm in place along with its connectors then use a 71 lb in torque (8 N.m) value for the pcm connector screws. To install an air cleaner cover into the air inlet housing begin by attaching the assembly clamps before lining up the intake air duct/resonator assembly and using a screw to tighten the intake air duct clamp to 3 n.m (27 lb in). The last step requires the reconnection of the battery negative cable followed by any required pcm programming procedures.

Ensure all connections are secure.

Complete that process before proceeding.

Control modules typically contain Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (EEPROM) and Flash Read Only Memory.

Turn OFF the ignition and connect the Tech 2(TM) to the vehicle data link connector (DLC).
