Drive Shaft

The first step for replacing the rear propeller shaft involves elevating the vehicle and recording the precise positioning of all driveline elements including propeller shafts and both drive axles and pinion flanges and output shafts which need rebuilding to their original system balance state. Disassemble the pinion flange bolts from its rear section as well as the retainers but do not strike the original yoke ears or the injection joints will break and never force tools between universal joints. Uninstall the yoke together with the cross components while taping the bearing cups to stop the bearing rollers from falling out. Then push the propeller shaft forward and lower it beneath the rear axle to remove it while keeping the Universal Joint from an excessive angle to avoid fracture. Use a suitable solvent for cleaning parts while inspecting the nylon yoke to check for burrs in its outer diameter as well as examining how the bearing cups have been installed. Assess Slip Yoke splines for wear but replace all parts if necessary. To install the propeller shaft first position it inside the transmission before lubricating the slip joint followed by attaching the yoke and cross assembly to the pinion flange while aligning reference marks between the pinion flange and rear yoke before proper yoke installation. Mount the pinion flange retainers and bolts before tightening them to 36 nm (27 ft. Lbs.) while lowering the vehicle.

Lower the vehicle, ensuring all driveline components are reassembled in their original positions to maintain factory system balance.

Tighten them to 36 Nm (27 ft. lbs.).
