    Q:
How to replace the rear axle shaft on GMC Safari? Posted by Customer
    A:
Vehicle elevation is the first step for rear Axle Shaft replacement before tire-wheels come off then brake rotors can be removed. Begin by removing the rear cover together with its gasket before proceeding to remove the pinion shaft locking bolt. Removing the pinion shaft is necessary only when the axle lacks a locking Differential. Those who have a locking Differential should withdraw the shaft to its partial position before rotating the case to let the pinion shaft touch the housing. A screwdriver or comparable tool should be used to rotate the lock until it matches the position of the thrust block. Press the shaft flange of the axle toward the Differential before removing a c-lock from the button end of the shaft. Axle Shaft rotation must be avoided completely during removal to stop gears from shifting positions thus creating obstacles during reassembly. Insert the new Axle Shaft into the rear axle housing by placing it directly into place while making sure splines connect with the Differential side gear. When operating without a locking Differential you need to fasten the lock on the button end of the Axle Shaft. People with locking differentials need to position the partial pinion shaft withdrawal coupled with placing their c-lock on the Axle Shaft until both ends reach the thrust block. The flange of the shaft should extend outward to position the lock within the Differential gear. While doing this alignment, ensure the pinion shaft hole matches the Differential case bolt opening. The new pinion shaft locking bolt must be installed before tightening it to 25 nm (19 ft. Lbs.). Reposition the rear cover and gasket and then install the brake rotor as well as wheel and tire assembly. Finish by placing the designated fluid of the rear axle before lowering the vehicle.
