2000 Cadillac Eldorado Brake Pad Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear brake pads on 2000 Cadillac Eldorado?
A: To replace the rear brake pads, the removal of two-thirds of the brake fluid of the master cylinder should be done while the vehicle is raised and supported. Remove the wheel. Do not use a screwdriver or pry bar to compress the caliper piston because it can knock the piston boot and cause corrosion. Do not exceed 1mm piston travel as this could destroy the internal adjusting mechanism. Use a large c clamp to compress the caliper piston into caliper bore until you get resistance felt without pressing any further than 1mm of travel. Remove the park brake cable bracket from the brake caliper and take out the cable from the lever. Pull out the pin of the bottom caliper slide, then look for signs of damage in the caliper bolt suspension boots. Replace if necessary. Check the piston boot and caliper pin bolt for damage or rust, replacing as required but do not clean off rust. Rotate the caliper body upward and take off the inboard and outboard pads from the anchor bracket and the pad retainers. For installation, retract the caliper piston into the caliper bore by using a spanner type wrench, turning it clockwise until it is fully seated. Mount the Brake Pad retainers mounted in the caliper anchor bracket and then the inboard and outboard brake pads are mounted. Flat the caliper piston boot while using a small plastic or wooden tool to lift the inner edge of the boot for any trapped air. Position the caliper piston against the locating pin of the brake pads, tip the caliper down over the brake pads into the anchor bracket, and fit the lower caliper slide pin, while tightening to 27 nm (20 ft.lbs). Attach the park brake cable to the park brake lever on a caliper and install the park brake cable bracket onto a caliper. Mount the tire and wheel assembly, drop the vehicle and level the brake fluid level. Start the vehicle and apply about 778 n (175 lb.) 3 times on the brake pedal to seat the Brake Caliper Piston and pads and recheck brake fluid level. Finally, the pads and rotors should be burnished.
