2000 Chevrolet Cavalier Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the A/C Orifice Tube at the condenser to evaporator tube connection on 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier?
A: The first step before changing the A/C orifice tube at the condenser-to-evaporator connection requires recovering all refrigerant. The first step begins with taking off the upper filler panel before removing the bolt which anchors the evaporator hose assembly to the condenser unit followed by loosening the evaporator tube block fitting nut. The evaporator tube extraction from the condenser must be immediate while properly capped or taped to block contamination then discard the O-Ring seal. Use needle nose pliers to remove the A/C orifice tube by pulling on its edges that should avoid touching the filter screen before returning the tube to its proper position then capping or taping the evaporator tube. The technician should begin by clearing sediment from the tube then position a heat gun 7mm (1/4 inch) from the inlet pipe dimples to heat the tube while using needle-nosed pliers to loosen the A/C orifice tube with pushing and turning motions for removal. Clean the evaporator inlet line by swabbing inside the tubing. The A/C orifice tube requires examination for signs like broken plastic frame, torn or damaged filter screen (1,2) or damaged or plugged brass orifice tube. Proper replacement of the tube must be done if needed. When maintaining an old tube for reuse the user needs to first put either a new O-ring into place following an application of mineral base oil 525 viscosity refrigerant oil on its surface. Placing the new A/C orifice tube into the evaporator line sounds best when inserting the short filter screen inlet-side leading first. Afterward, remove protection from the tube. Cover a new O-ring installed on the condenser tube with 525 viscosity refrigerant oil before placing it onto clean sealing surfaces of tube fittings which received treatment with a lint-free dry clean cloth. The evaporator tube receives its block fitting nut installation onto the condenser while the technician torques the block fitting nut to 16 N.m (12 lb ft). Perform an evacuation then recharge of the A/C system before system operation testing and leak testing and end with upper filler panel installation.
