2001 Chevrolet Cavalier Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the A/C Orifice Tube on 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier?
A: There are three components needed for expansion (A/C orifice) tube replacement: Halogen Leak Detector (J 39400-A) and required tools. Start by taking the evaporator tube off in order to disconnect it from the condenser tube. You should remove the A/C orifice tube from the evaporator tube then perform a damage inspection. A broken plastic frame on the tube requires complete replacement of the device. When either the filter screen (1, 2) features a tear or damage or obstructed by tiny grit the system needs replacement along with the brass A/C orifice tube when it demonstrates symptoms of damage or blockage. Shop air can clean metal deposits off the filter screen but it should be reused if shop air cleaning produces satisfactory results. Scrape or discarding mineral base 525 viscosity refrigerant oil from a new O-ring before installing it into the tube. Take away the tape and caps from the evaporator tube before positioning needle-nose pliers on the A/C orifice tube edge. Put the tube into the evaporator line fully with the large filter screen facing outward. Use a lint-free clean dry cloth to clean both tube fittings sealing surfaces before placing new O-rings on the condenser tube which require 525 viscosity refrigerant oil. The technician must reinstall the evaporator tube followed by an evacuation, recharging of the A/C system and running a leak test on evaporator fittings by using a Halogen Leak Detector (J 39400-A). Seal the installation by putting in the hood close-out filler panel.
