2000 Chevrolet Malibu Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Crankshaft Seal on 2000 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: A safe start to servicing or repairing the Crankshaft main bearing seal requires removal of the negative Battery Cable. The service procedure begins with the installation of three specific tools: engine support fixture (J 28467-360), engine support fixture adapters (J 28467-90), and rear main bearing oil seal installer (J 34686). After transmission and Flywheel removal check to verify signs of a rear main seal leak. A screwdriver or equivalent tool will help carefully separate the seal without damaging the Crankshaft's outside diameter surface or chamfer. Examine the bore's inside dimension and Crankshaft surface for burrs and nicks before repair or replacement. Attach engine oil to the new seal both at its inside and outside diameters before sliding it onto the mandrel until it stops at the tool's collar. Screwing clockwise with the t-handle on the rear main bearing oil seal installer (J 34686) will properly seat the seal into the bore as you maintain the dowel pin alignment between both the Crankshaft and the tool. After verifying that the seal sits in alignment, remove the securing screws and proceed with installing the Flywheel and transmission. Finish the repair by taking out the engine support fixture (J 28467-360) and both engine support fixture adapters (J 28467-90) along with the rear main bearing oil seal installer (J 34686). Reconnect the negative Battery Cable then check fluid levels and search for leaks.
