2000 Chevrolet Tracker Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Automatic Transmission Shifter on 2000 Chevrolet Tracker?
A: Service or repair of the a/t shifter requires starting with negative Battery Cable disconnection before moving the manual selector to the neutral position. Start by detaching the 4 screws identified as (1,6,3,4) and the 2 plastic retaining clips identified as (2,5). After that, remove the console from the vehicle. You need to detach the shift lock solenoid connector which is located under the carpet and disconnect the shift indicator lamp. Start by lifting the vehicle then supporting it properly while you remove the 4 bolts holding the manual selector to the floor. Remove the selector lever retaining clip and shift select cable along with their washer before detaching the select cable locknut and shift select cable from its manual shift lever location. Check the condition of the shift select cable then lower the vehicle for installation before replacing the cable if any damage is detected. First remove the two knob screws then release the knob and finally uninstall the select indicator assembly followed by the select lever assembly. The installation process starts with fitting the select lever assembly and the select indicator assembly into their correct positions and ending with knob installation followed by screwing on the 2 knob screws. Install the shift select cable into its bracket at the transmission while it remains loose but secured before tightening the locknut. Priority step is to torque shift select cable locknut at 7 nm (62 inch lbs.) followed by lowering the vehicle to access manual selector and manual shift lever. Then install the shift select cable to the selector lever while securing its retaining clip. Both ends of the shift select cable require inspection for deflection before lowering the vehicle then installing the manual selector to the floor while using 18 nm (13 ft. Lbs.) torque on the 4 mounting bolts. Reinstall the shift indicator lamp underneath the carpet followed by the shift lock solenoid electrical connector then fasten the console box to the floor by using 4 screws (1,3,4,6) along with two plastic retaining clips. Conclude the process by setting the manual selector to park then replacing the negative Battery Cable.
