2000 Chevrolet Tracker Wheel Cylinder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the wheel cylinder on 2000 Chevrolet Tracker?
A: The initial step to service and repair wheel cylinders requires lifting and supporting the vehicle before starting any work. Begin the process by removing the wheel and tire from the rear position followed by the drum and brake shoes. Apply gm non-chlorinated brake parts cleaner gm p/n 12377981 (or equivalent) to cleanse both the Wheel Cylinder and the outboard portion of the Brake Backing Plate. Use gm non-chlorinated brake parts cleaner or equivalent brand to wash both the brake pipe and the inboard Brake Backing Plate surfaces. Secure the brake pipes by loosening their 2 flare nuts but check for fluid leaks before removing them from the right Wheel Cylinder. Loosen the right Wheel Cylinder's brake pipe flare nut yet keep the opening free from brake fluid loss. Separate the left rear brake bleeder valve cap along with the 2 Wheel Cylinder bolts before removing it. When repairing the right Wheel Cylinder service technicians must take off the front brake bleeder valve cap to access it followed by removing the 2 right Wheel Cylinder brake pipes and capping them using bleeder valve caps for protection against contaminants. Remove the brake pipe from the left Wheel Cylinder then secure it using the bleeder valve cap. Separate the backing plate from the Wheel Cylinder and remove the gasket that shields the Wheel Cylinder. During installation replace any damaged or worn gasket on the Wheel Cylinder before placing the Wheel Cylinder on the backing plate. Secure the two Wheel Cylinder nuts on the assembly and torque them to 8.5 nm (78 inch lbs.). To install the right Wheel Cylinder you must first remove the caps from both brake pipes then attach the pipes to the Wheel Cylinder and torque the flare nuts to 12 foot pounds (16 Nm). Attach the brake pipe to the Wheel Cylinder and torque the flare nut to 16 nm (12 ft. Lbs.). A right Wheel Cylinder requires a front brake bleeder valve cap during servicing. Proceed by placing the cap on the left rear brake bleeder valve then add the brake shoes and Brake Drum and the rear tire and wheel assembly. The brake system requires bleeding after the vehicle reaches the correct height.
