2001 Buick LeSabre Shock Absorber Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How should gas charged shock absorbers be safely drained to prevent personal injury on 2001 Buick LeSabre?
A: Gas charged shock absorbers maintain high compression pressure thus never remove the snap ring on top of the tube because doing so might lead to damaging explosions. Safety glasses must be worn during centerpunching and drilling operations on the shock absorber while ensuring the drilling tool does not perforate the tube. A brush-punch should create a 10 mm (0.4 inch) mark at the tube's base first. Attach the shock absorber to a vise at a horizontal position while extending the shock absorber rod entirely. Pour out the gas or gas/oil mixture from the shock absorber hole by using a 5 mm (3/16 inch) drill bit positioned at the centerpunch; shop towels should be available to collect any escaping oil. Drill a second hole at the middle tube centerpunch using a 5 mm (3/16 inch) drill bit which will also empty oil; properly contain the dripping oil by utilizing shop towels. Before pouring out the drain pan place the shock absorber horizontally with holes down and insert the rod into the tube to extract all residual oil from the shock absorber.
