2001 Cadillac Catera Brake Line Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the brake line on 2001 Cadillac Catera?
A: Buy new tubing and steel fitting nuts based on the brake pipe's outside diameter before starting work. Measure the old pipe with cotton string then cut the tubing about 3 mm (1/8 inch) longer for each ISO flare joint. Make square cuts at both tube ends then round their inner and outer diameters with the de-burring tool. Start the flare process only when both fittings are properly installed on the clean tubing. Secure the flaring tool body (J 29803-A) in a vise with a selected collet and forming mandrel set that matches the tube size. Then put the proper forming mandrel inside the tool body. Set the forcing screw into the forming mandrel and hold its place using your finger before rotating the screw clockwise once. Thread the clamping nut on top of the tubing until it reaches the correct collet position while allowing 19 mm (3/4 inch) of tubing to extend from the end. Place the assembly for screw threading by fitting the tube end to the forming mandrel surface and tightening the clamping nut firmly without pushing out the tube. Tighten the forcing screw slowly until it meets its base. Overtightening at this point will produce an incorrect flare size. Unwind the clamping nut from the tool body and detach it with the collet. You need to install defect-free tubing before using compressed air to clean out debris while protecting your eyes because dirt can damage air brake valve sealants. The tubing flare is ready for usage now. Bend the new pipe with a tube bender to match the old pipe while keeping all moving parts 19 mm (3/4 inch) apart and awarding a 13 mm (1/2 inch) clearance to vibrating parts and 7 mm (1/4 inch) separation between shielded lines unless they clip to a component.
