2001 Cadillac DeVille Exhaust Manifold Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the right exhaust manifold on 2001 Cadillac DeVille?
A: The first step in replacing the right Exhaust Manifold begins with wheel straightening and steering column locking using the steering column lock pin (J 42640). First disconnect the heated Oxygen Sensor at the sensor pigtail before raising and supporting the vehicle. Start by removing the rear Exhaust Manifold pipe then disconnect the two nuts holding the secondary air tube to the Exhaust Manifold before removing the secondary air tube separately with its gasket which should be discarded. The power steering gear heat shield's post heated Oxygen Sensor wiring harness retainer needs removal before two bolts can be removed which allows the heat shield to come off. The elimination of the rearward vehicle speed sensor heat shield nut allows for heat shield removal with forward nut relaxation until it separates from the transaxle. Start the procedure by taking off the lower Control Arm real-time dampening links to their connections and then remove the steering gear intermediate shaft pinch bolt to disconnect the intermediate shaft. Unscrew first the nut that keeps the right Engine Mount anchored to its bracket and then the left transaxle mount-to-bracket connection through its securing nut. Position a high screw jack under the engine frame rear section then unscrew the four bolts between the frame and body. Lower the screw jack by 4 cm (1.5 inches). The heated Oxygen Sensor must be removed before right Exhaust Manifold retaining bolts which allow removal of the right Exhaust Manifold along with its necessary gasket which needs replacement. Examine and clean the right Exhaust Manifold before installing a new Exhaust Manifold Gasket onto the cylinder head studs and placing the right Exhaust Manifold correctly on the right cylinder head. Set the right Exhaust Manifold nuts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) then place the heated Oxygen Sensor in position and elevate the engine cradle into place. Connect the four rearward engine frame-to-body bolts at 191 nm (141 ft. Lbs.), eliminate the jack, then fasten the nut that joins the left transaxle mount bracket and torque it to 80 nm (59 ft. Lbs.). Fasten the right Engine Mount bracket nut with 80 nm (59 ft. Lbs.) torque while keeping it tightened. Seating of the intermediate shaft must be complete before installing the pinch bolt which later connects the intermediate shaft to the steering gear while tightening the bolt to 45 nm (33 ft. Lbs.). The real-time dampening sensor links must be connected to the lower control arms while the vehicle speed sensor heat shield should be installed onto transaxle studs followed by nut installation (2,3) at 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). The power steering gear heat shield needs installation along with two bolts which must be tightened to 9 nm (79 inch lbs.) before connecting the post heated Oxygen Sensor wiring harness retainer to the heat shield. Use a new gasket to connect the secondary air tube to the Exhaust Manifold while tightening its two nuts to 12 nm (106 inch lbs.). The last step is to install the rear Exhaust Manifold pipe while lowering the vehicle before removing the steering column lock pin (J 42640) to reconnect the heated Oxygen Sensor at its sensor pigtail.
