2001 Chevrolet Cavalier Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Rack and Pinion Boot on 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier?
A: Start by removing the outer tie rod then unthread both the inner tie rod nut and tie rod clamp from the vehicle. A side cutter tool should be used to pull off and dispose of the boot clamp before extracting both the rack and pinion boot. Put the new boot clamp onto the rack and pinion boot then grease the inner rod and gear assembly before putting the boot onto the inner tie rod assembly. The rack and pinion boot needs to avoid twisting or misshaping when installed. The rack and pinion boot requires manual adjustment when needed before securing it. After placing the boot into its proper groove put the assembly together. Finish the installation by using the J22610 Service Boot Clamp Installer to both clamp and crimp the boot. To complete the replacement install the tie rod end clamp on the boot with pliers then apply the jam nut to the inner tie rod assembly before reattaching the outer tie rod.
