Service Boot Clamp Installer (J22610). The process starts with outer tie rod removal before you detach the hexagon jam nut from the inner tie rod assembly. Start by removing the tie rod end clamp from the rack and pinion boot using side cutters and discard the clamp. The breather tube requires marking on the gear assembly prior to removing the rack and pinion boot with the breather tube. To install a new boot clamp onto the new rack and pinion boot first coat the inner tie rod assembly, the rack and pinion gear assembly with grease before boot installation onto the inner tie rod assembly. Attach the breather tube to its proper placement according to the initial removal mark and the boot's molded nipple. Make sure the rack and pinion boot displays a smooth and untwisted shape without puckering. Use your hands to fine-tune the boot clamp before it goes into the boot clamp tool. Slide the boot into the gear assembly groove and then use the Service Boot Clamp Installer (J22610) to clamp and endure the boot installation. After pinching the pliers onto the boot, set the tie rod end clamp in position before tightening the hexagon jam nut onto the inner tie rod assembly for finishing the outer tie rod assembly.
