2001 Chevrolet Lumina Brake Line Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the brake line using the J 29803-A ISO Flaring Kit on 2001 Chevrolet Lumina?
A: Use J 29803-A ISO Flaring Kit (J 29803-A) together with double-walled steel brake pipe to avoid brake system failure when replacing brake pipes. Begin your project by acquiring proper tubing with steel fitting nuts of the required size then cut the tubing to reach the old pipe length along with 3 mm (1/8 inch) extra for each ISO flare. Fit tubing fittings prior to flaring the edges and use a de-burring tool to gently round the inside and outside diameter of the pipe. Wipe away all lubricants from the brake pipe and flaring tool before fixing the J 29803-A body into a vise. Use the correct-sized collet and forming mandrel for the pipe then insert the forming mandrel into the tool body. Grasp the mandrel then progress the forcing screw until it reaches the mandrel yet reverse direction for one entire cycle. Secure the clamping nut over the brake pipe until it rests in the correct collet position which leaves about 19 mm (3/4 inch) of pipe extending from the end. Insert the collet into the tool body with the brake pipe end touching the forming mandrel face while tightening the clamping nut securely. Apply force to the forcing screw until it reaches its stopping point while being careful to bypass any potential oversizing of the flare formation. To finish the flare you should remove the clamping nut from the tool body before disassembling the clamping nut and collet assembly. Finish by bending the pipe to duplicate the shape of the existing pipe after maintaining a gap of 19 mm (3/4 inch) between all movable and vibrating parts.
