2001 Chevrolet Lumina Brake Master Cylinder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to overhaul the brake master cylinder on 2001 Chevrolet Lumina?
A: Brake Master Cylinder overhauling begins by taking out the abs hydraulic modulator and master cylinder first. Clean the reservoir cap before you remove the cap and diaphragm from the device. Replace the caps and diaphragm when you notice cuts, cracks, nicks or deformation. Rideshare the fluid level sensor along with the proportioning valves should they exist. You should carefully remove the retainer during primary Piston depression to prevent damage to any components. Introduce low pressure non-lubricated compressed air through the upper outlet port at the blind end of the bore to extract the primary Piston and secondary Piston and the spring as well as spring retainer. Before inspecting the master cylinder for damage, remove the seals and spring retainer from the secondary Piston and check for scoring or corrosion. Use clean denatured alcohol to clean all parts before drying them with non-lubricated compressed air. Start assembly by placing lubricated seals and spring retainer onto the secondary Piston followed by insertion of the spring and secondary Piston into the cylinder bore where you should lubricate with clean brake fluid. After installing the lubricated primary Piston use your fingers to depress it before installing the retainer. Reinstall both the fluid level sensor and proportioning valves if they exist in the system. After inserting the diaphragm into the reservoir cap you can attach the cap onto the reservoir before reinstalling the abs hydraulic modulator and the master cylinder.
