• Q: How to replace the exhaust camshaft and lash adjusters on 2001 Chevrolet Prizm?

  A: Engine Timing Chain must be removed first before starting to replace the exhaust camshaft sprocket bolt together with its cam sprocket. Proceed by unscrewing the exhaust camshaft bearing cap bolts from the ends moving toward the center and then remove the front camshaft bearing cap before extracting the exhaust camshaft from the Cylinder Head. The lifters require inspection before replacing any worn components. Set the exhaust camshaft onto the Cylinder Head using correct number 1 cam lobe orientation and install each bearing cap into its designated position according to the cap numbers and directional symbols indicated. Begin by installing all camshaft bearing cap bolts and tight them sequentially to 13 nm (10 ft. Lbs.) and the front bearing cap bolts to 23 nm (17 ft. Lbs.). Connect the exhaust camshaft sprocket to the camshaft shaft with the camshaft sprocket bolt at 55 nm (40 ft. Lbs.). The engine requires reinstallation of its Timing Chain followed by valve clearance inspection and adjustment.
