2001 Chevrolet Prizm Power Steering Pump Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the power steering pump on 2001 Chevrolet Prizm?
A: The Power Steering Pump replacement process demands the stepwise removal of power steering fluid through the reservoir followed by serpentine Drive Belt extraction. Remove the power steering fluid reservoir outlet pipe/hose from the beginning by first disconnecting the inlet hose fitting and the inlet pipe/hose from the pump. Begin by supporting the vehicle and removing the rh front tire with wheel after which you will separate six bolts holding the rh lower engine splash shield. You should disconnect the two bolts securing the Power Steering Pump while also removing the two nuts and taking out the Power Steering Pump with its attached pulley. Position the pump and pulley inside a soft jawed vise before removing both the pulley nut along with the pulley from the pump. Setting the Power Steering Pump in a vise allows you to install the pulley followed by tightening the nut to 43 nm (32 ft. Lbs.). Secure the Power Steering Pump with its pulley by using the two bolts and two nuts while tightening them to 37 nm (27 ft. Lbs.). Use six bolts to reattach the rh lower engine splash shield and tighten them to 10 nm (89 ft. Lbs.), restore the rh front tire and wheel assembly before lowering the vehicle. The Power Steering Reservoir outlet hose can be attached to the pump using a hose clamp while the power steering gear inlet pipe/hose will be connected and torqued to 54 nm (40 ft. Lbs.). Reinstall the serpentine Drive Belt along with fluid reservoir filling using new power steering fluid after adjusting the belt to its proper position. The power steering system requires bleeding as a final step to guarantee correct operation.
