• Q: How to replace the engine front timing cover on 2001 Chevrolet Venture?

  A: To replace the engine front cover, drain the engine cooling system and oil. Take out the crankshaft balancer, the drive belt tensioner, and the Power Steering Pump without disconnecting the lines, leaving the pump for another place. Disconnect the thermostat bypass pipe and radiator outlet hose from the front cover, and then remove the coolant pump pulley. Pull out the upper and lower Crankshaft Position Sensor wiring harness brackets from the engine front cover as well as remove the engine front cover bolts to remove the engine front cover and gasket. Check the engine front cover for damages to the cover, oil seal on the crankshaft front, and gasket sealing surface. If replacing the engine front cover, remove the drive belt shield, crankshaft position sensor, and coolant pump from the cover. For installation, if removed, install the coolant pump and Crankshaft Position Sensor on the engine front cover and then the drive belt shield. Put the drive belt shield bolt and tighten it to 10 nm (89 inch lbs.). Before installing the engine front cover, place the engine front cover gasket and apply sealer GM P/N 12346004 or equivalent to both sides of the lower tabs of the gasket. Retighten the engine front cover bolts to 55 nm (41 ft. lbs.), bolt to 47 nm (35 ft. lbs.), and bolts to 21 nm (16 ft. lbs.). Reattach lower and upper Crankshaft Position Sensor wiring harness brackets, lower and upper coolant pump pulley, lower and upper radiator outlet hose, and then the thermostat bypass pipe to the engine front cover. Finally, install the Power Steering Pump with lines, drive belt tensioner, and crankshaft balancer, and top up the engine with new engine oil and the cooling system with engine coolant.
