- Q: How to replace the liftgate Weather Strip on 2001 GMC Safari?A: To remove the liftgate weather strip, start by opening the door and remove the fourth pillar trim on the left and right hand sides. Then remove rear upper garnish molding then remove the body side trim panel from both sides then the rear trim plate. Remove the weather strip from the pinch-weld flange from the top-right corner. For installation, the weather strip should first be seated onto the pinch-weld flange in each top right corner, being done by hand with a possible use of a rubber mallet, if necessary, in the thick flange areas and corners. Once you have installed the weather strip you're want to attach the rear trim plate followed by the body sides trim panels to the left and the right, and the rear upper garnish followed by the fourth pillar trim panels to the left and the right before you close the door.
