The first step to replace a front door weather strip involves removing the interior garnish moldings. You should start by using the Door Trim Pad and Garnish Clip Remover to extract the door weather strip from the body flange at its upper right corner that follows a clockwise direction through (6,5,4,3,2,1). Install the weather strip onto the body flange beginning at points 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 while still leaving some pieces free so the length remains even around the door aperture. After positioning the weather strip 154 mm (6 in) from either side of the corner point on the body flange install it to the opening by hand. Using a rubber mallet to strike the weather strip against the flange at right angles will stop the carrier from spreading excessively and reducing retention. The rubber mallet must be used to place the thick flange areas at the hinge and windshield pillar locations and in each corner of the weather strip. The installation requires two critical factors: the weather strip should settle properly in the corner and match the body flange radius and the carrier should be fully seated onto the flange to produce a seamless door opening trim. Also ensure the carrier shows no signs of distortion and spreading out excessive and is not warped after installation and fully treated with GM weather strip silicone lube. Reinstall the interior garnish moldings as the final step.

The first step to replace front door opening Weather Strip requires removal of interior garnish moldings. The door trim pad and garnish clip remover (J 38778) should be used to remove the Weather Strip from the door pinchweld flange started at the upper right corner until it is detached from the flange throughout its length. The Weather Strip length should be divided evenly around the door opening through partial attachment to pinweld flanges at 6 main locations. Hand-fitting this Weather Strip onto the pinchweld flange should begin at the intermediate points between the corners and extend to 154 mm (6 in) on either side of each corner. When using a rubber mallet to strike the Weather Strip at the flange it must be done carefully to prevent carrier spreading that weakens the retention effect. The rubber mallet should be used to install the Weather Strip at both corner positions and the pinchweld flange spots of the hinge and windshield pillars. The finishing inspection must verify that the Weather Strip fits properly into the corner while matching the pinchweld flange radius and completely rests on the flange for a smooth door opening shape. It should display no distorted or excessive carrier spreading and no kinks or bending after installation. Seal the Weather Strip with gm Weather Strip silicone lube before putting back the interior garnish moldings.

Install the weatherstrip into each corner and the pinchweld flange areas of the hinge and windshield pillars.

Apply 3M Weatherstrip adhesive or an equivalent.

Close the swing out window.

Reinstall the interior trim.

Close the door.

A rubber mallet can be used to secure it in the thicker flange areas and at each corner.

Fit the weatherstrip to the opening by hand, seating it onto the pinchweld flange to approximately 154 mm (6 in) on each side of the corner.

Reinstall the rear trim plate, body side trim panels on both sides, rear upper garnish molding, and finally the fourth pillar trim on both sides before closing the door.

Install the molding by pushing it onto the flange, starting at the pre-formed corners.

Remove the rear trim plate (part number: 12350).

Pull the weatherstrip from the pinch-weld flange, starting at the upper right corner.

Start at the upper right corner and continue down until the weatherstrip is completely free.
