2002 Buick Park Avenue Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Replace Rear Brake Calipers on 2002 Buick Park Avenue?
A: Before starting the brake caliper replacement you should check the brake master cylinder reservoir fluid level; proceed if it lands between top and bottom lines but bleed fluid when it sits above these marks. Raise the vehicle and detach its tire and wheel assembly. Unfasten the front park brake cable from its connector point by pulling downward. Place a heavy c-clamp on the caliper piston to push it into its slot. Be cautious to move the piston only 1 mm or 0.039 inch to stay away from breaking the adjusting system. Seal both brake caliper and brake hose connections to prevent losing brake fluid before changing the parts. Extract the brake hose from the caliper bolt and detach the brake hose from the unit keeping the two copper gaskets. Disconnect the brake caliper park brake cable bracket without breaking the park brake cable connection first before detaching the cable from its caliper parking position. Turn the caliper into an upright position and remove it from the upper brake caliper pin bolt. Before using your brake caliper retainers again clean them properly and then apply high temperature silicone lube to the pin bolts. You should then mount the caliper over the upper pin bolt. Lower the bracket onto the attachment point before putting in the pin bolts and tightening them to 27 nm. Insert new gaskets in the brake hose openings and fasten the brake hose bolt to the caliper by tightening it to 45 nm (33 ft. Lbs.). Secure the park brake cable to the lever then fit its base onto the caliper body while tightening the bracket bolt to 43 nm (32 ft. Lbs.). Attach the park brake cable front end to its connection point. Flush air from brake lines and use a brake pedal manual pump cycle up to 2/3 of travel followed by slow release while engine power stays off. Hold the brake pedal down for 15 seconds then release it three times before feeling a solid pedal action. This assures brake pad and caliper piston placement. Lifetime the tire and wheel components into their correct positions before lowering the vehicle.
