2001 Buick Park Avenue Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to overhaul the rear brake calipers on 2001 Buick Park Avenue?
A: Remove the rear brake caliper from the vehicle to overhaul. If there is a tendency of brake fluid leakage from the rear side of the integral part brake actuator shaft seal, consider replacing the brake caliper assembly since the non-serviceable seal might be the reason for the leakage to occur. Next, unscrew the caliper sleeves and dust boots and disassemble them, and then with the help of a small wooden or plastic tool remove the Brake Caliper Piston dust boot seal retaining ring. Using the spanner type wrench, loosen the Brake Caliper Piston by turning it clockwise and take it together with the dust boot seal out from the nay caliper and only throw out the boot seal. Take out the Piston seal from the caliper bore, remove and discard the bleeder valve. Carefully reposition the lever return spring of the park brake actuator to release the tension from the lever, then check the work of the integral park brake mechanism. If it freezes or grabs, change the brake caliper assembly. Clean Brake Caliper Piston bore and seal counterbore, piston, and sleeves with denatured alcohol and dry them using non-lubricated, filtered air. Check the caliper bore: no damage. If their is light rust or corrosion, then try to remove it with a fine piece of emery paper if it cannot be removed or if there are cracks, scoring, or excessive corrosion, change the caliper assembly. Examine the caliper Piston and sleeves, in case there is any damage, replace them. Take off the park brake lever return spring and nut holding park brake lever to actuator shaft, remove the park brake lever. Tap the service tab of the park brake actuator shaft seal to release it, and inspect the sealing surface for damage using a flat bladed tool or punch. Apply a light coat of high temperature silicone brake lubricant to the new park brake actuator shaft seal contact surface, install the new seal and reinstall the park brake lever and return spring. The new Piston seal being lubricated, with delco supreme 11 (R)(GM P/N 12377967) or equal dot-3 brake fluids and then fitting it into caliper bore and attach the new dust boot seal to the caliper Piston. Place the caliper Piston in the bore rotating counter clockwise to engage fully and attach the Piston dust boot seal to the counterbore with the attaching ring. Put back the bleeder valve, apply high temp silicone brake lubrication on sleeves and mounting holes and install the dust boots and sleeves. Finally, replace the brake caliper back to the vehicles and carry out bleeding of the hydraulic brake system checking for leaks during the process. If there is leakage of brake fluid from the front side toward the Piston dust boot, then replace the caliper Piston assembly.
