2002 Chevrolet Malibu Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear crankshaft seal on 2002 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: Crankshaft rear oil seal replacement starts with removing the Flywheel while maintaining the Crankshaft outside diameter surface and chamfer's integrity using a prying tool. Use a screwdriver at an angle through the dust lip to pry the seal out while shifting the tool's handle towards the Crankshaft pilot's end. Perform this action carefully across the entire seal until it is free. Check the bore's inside diameter (ID) for nicks or burrs before repairing it while inspecting the Crankshaft for burrs or nicks on its sealing surfaces requiring necessary repair or replacement. Before installing the new seal soak both its inner and outer diameters with engine oil before placing it onto the mandrel until the seal base reaches the j 34686 rear main bearing oil seal installer (J 34686) collar. Insert the dowel pin from the j 34686 into the Crankshaft dowel pin. Use hand force or tighten screw attachments to 5 nm (45 inch lbs.). Activate the t-handle on the j 34686 to advance the sealing seat into position against the bearing's surface. Unscrew the t-handle when it reaches the stop position to correctly position the collar for installing the next new seal before removing screws for bore seal examination. As a final step you will need to install the Flywheel before checking for correct fluid positions and looking for any leakage.
