Several tools are required for this job including Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers (J 35566) and Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers (J 35910) and Stub Shaft Removal (J 38868) and Impact Slide Hammer (J 6125) alongside Snap Ring Pliers (J 8059). You must first remove the old snap ring from the stub shaft before throwing it away. After connecting the Stub Shaft Removal tool (J 38868) to the snap ring groove on the stub shaft utilize the Impact Slide Hammer (J 6125) on the removal tool to pull out the shaft from the tripot housing. Insert new snap rings onto the stub shaft but watch for inboard seal damage while performing maintenance. From the halfshaft bar remove its small and large seal retaining clamps before discarding both pieces. First separate the trilobal tripot bushing's seal from the bushing then move it away from the joint location. Install Snap Ring Pliers (J 8059) to spread the spacer ring before installing it with the spider assembly onto the bar. Reposition the retaining ring from the bar's groove then carefully move the spider assembly off of the bar. Use cleaning solvent to thoroughly clean tripot balls and needle rollers and the housing by removing every trace of old grease and debris before allowing parts to dry. Check the housing along with its spider assembly and trilobal tripot bushing and needle rollers and tripot balls and inspection seal for signs of wear or damage. The inboard seal process requires installation of the small seal retaining clamp onto the neck of the seal without crimping before sliding the seal on the bar to position it in the seal groove. Use Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers (J 35910) to crimp the seal retaining clamp at 136 Nm (100 ft. lbs.) while inspecting the gap dimension throughout crimping. Position the spacer ring on the halfshaft bar to extend beyond the second groove while keeping the spider assembly's counterbored face facing the end of the bar. Use Snap Ring Pliers (J 8059) to install the second retaining ring in the groove at the bar end then move the spider assembly toward the bar end. Place grease from the service kit into the seal's groove on the bar and then pack the housing with the remaining oil. Reinstall the first spacer ring in its bar groove marking the conclusion of this service procedure. Align the trilobal tripot bushing to the housing with the face as the reference point before placing the larger of two replacement clamps on the seal. Insert the housing so the big diameter of the seal fits over the trilobal tripot bushing of the bar. Finally, use Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers (J 35566) to close the seal retaining clamp after proper seal , housing and large clamp alignment has occurred.
