2002 Chevrolet Prizm Brake Calipers Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to overhaul brake calipers on 2002 Chevrolet Prizm?
A: The process for brake caliper rebuilding starts by taking the component from its vehicle placement and freeing its Piston boot and set ring. Compressed air pressure should not contact your fingers before the Piston to protect yourself from damage. Place a block of hard wood or shop cloth inside the caliper body to catch the Piston during compressed air pushes. A compressed air stream into the brake hose hole removes the Piston while you use a screwdriver to remove the Piston seal from the caliper housing. Take out the sliding pins from both parts with a hammer and dull chisel. Clean all components including the caliper slide bushings by soaking them in denatured alcohol and dry them with unlubricated compressed air before blowing out all passages. Review the condition of the caliper housing, set ring, bleeding valve, carrier and Piston parts looking for problems and installing new parts when needed. Clean brake fluid lubrication goes onto all rubber parts before you install the bleeder valve which you need to fasten with 8.3 nm torque setting (74 inch lbs. Force). Apply lubriplate lubricant gm p/n 12346293 or an equivalent lubricant to both new dust boots and place them onto the caliper carrier so the metal plates fit securely into their torque plates. Apply lubriplate lubricant gm p/n 12346293 to both sliding pins before placing the sliding bushing pin into the bottom of the torque plate then the other sliding pin without bushing into its top position. Apply lubriplate lubricant, gm p/n 12346293 to the Piston seal parts and then put them in the caliper housing. Insert the Piston seal followed by the Piston assembly. Put the Piston boot and caliper set ring on before tightening the dust boots securely in both caliper grooves. Reinstall the caliper.
