2001 Chevrolet Prizm Brake Calipers Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to overhaul brake calipers on 2001 Chevrolet Prizm?
A: First separate the brake caliper from the vehicle before you handle the caliper set ring and Piston boot removal. You should keep your fingers away from the Piston during air line application. Use a wood or cloth block to keep the Piston from escaping as compressed air pushes it through the connector hole on the brake hose. Insert a screwdriver under the Piston seal before taking the Piston from the brake caliper. Press the sliding pins from both caliper pieces and dust boots using a wooden tool and hammer. Wipe all brake system components in the caliper with denatured alcohol then dry them using clean compressed air from a hose. Also clean all passages within the caliper body and bleeder valve. Look for and replace damaged or worn parts in the caliper housing, caliper carrier, Piston, Piston seal, Piston boot, caliper slide bushing, and caliper set ring. After applying brake fluid to all rubber parts install the bleeder valve and tighten it with 8.3 nm torque. Both dust boots need lubrication from lubriplate (R) lubricant gm p/n 12346293 or its equivalent before being installed onto the caliper carrier with a hammer and wrench to create a tight fit in the torque plate. Apply chosen lubrication to both sliding pins then push in the sliding pin plus bushing into the lower side of torque plate followed by the remaining sliding pin into the top segment. Apply lubriplate (R) lubricant gm p/n 12346293 to the Piston seal joint cylinder and Piston then put the components in order starting with the Piston seal, Piston, Piston boot, and caliper set ring. Keep the dust boots tightly fastened in the caliper grooves during reinstallation.
