2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear Drive Shaft on 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer?
A: The replacement process of rear propeller shaft starts by precisely measuring all driveline parts relative to propeller shaft and axles before disassembly with propeller shafts, drive axles, pinion flanges and output shafts then reassembling the parts to original positions following published specifications and respective torque limits. The first step includes lifting the vehicle while designating markings that connect the propeller shaft to both the transmission and Transfer Case and the rear axle pinion yoke. When uninstalling the rear axle pinion yoke retainers you must realize that pounding the yoke ears or inserting tools between the yoke and Universal Joint can cause injection joint fractures. Use the forward motion of the propeller shaft to expose the rear axle pinion yoke and repeat this process by using backward motion until it disconnects from the transmission or Transfer Case. Then remove the propeller shaft from the setup. The splines of the Slip Yoke must have sufficient grease before installation; add gm p/n 12377985 or equivalent grease if necessary. The propeller shaft insertion into transmission or Transfer Case requires the re-establishment of reference marks before it connects to rear axle pinion yoke through realigned reference marks. Fasten the yoke retainers along with the bolts using a torque of 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.) before letting the vehicle drop to its lower position.
