2002 GMC Savana 3500 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Automatic Transmission Filter in a 4L60-E transmission on 2002 GMC Savana 3500?
A: Separately support the raised vehicle and place a drain pan underneath the transmission Oil Pan for pulling off the automatic transmission fluid/filter in 4l60-e transmissions. You should first remove the Drain Plug from the Oil Pan when available however you must also detach the range selector cable bracket bolts to create space because lowering the pan needs cable retention. Before draining fluid you should begin by removing front and side Oil Pan bolts and making the rear bolts just four turns loose while gently using a rubber mallet on the pan to drain fluid. Begin by taking out the remaining housing bolts before extracting the Oil Pan together with its gasket. Then twist the filter out while also removing the filter seal that might require pliers for proper detachment. The procedure requires discarding the seal while inspecting the fluid color and searching for clutch material deposits along with bronze slivers and steel particles in the filter. Dismantle the gasket areas by cleaning them thoroughly with solvent so every piece of old gasket material disappears. Place automatic transmission fluid on the new filter seal before installing it into the transmission case by using a suitable socket for tapping. Begin by installing the new filter then add the Oil Pan covered with a new gasket while torquing the transmission case bolts at 11 nm (97 inch lbs.) with an equal and alternating pattern. The installation requires reinstalling the range selector cable bracket then torquing its bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Use gm p/n 12346004 sealant on the threads of the Oil Pan Drain Plug if it is present before installing and tightening the plug to 18 nm (13 ft. Lbs.). Add dexron iii transmission fluid to the transmission while it is lowered until it reaches the correct level for the initial addition. Check the cold fluid mark only at this time before inspecting the Oil Pan Gasket for potential leaks.
